In Arkansas, sunshine beckoned families to national parks. These parks would have been closed if not for Friday night's late agreement. National Historic sites here are also opened and hundred of people took advantage.
Saturday afternoon Maumelle Park, in Little Rock, was ideal for soaking-up the sun. "We're having a great time the weather is beautiful we're a Cub Scout pack 12 from Little Rock," says Camper Bill Fitzgerald. He gave his son and other cub scouts lessons snagging fish in the Arkansas River.
It's a day out Earlene Guel and family worried was in jeopardy. "we got a call last night around 8:30 that the park may be closed and if was we could not have the party here, so was just sitting hoping and praying," says Guel.
"Yesterday [Friday] afternoon as we were getting ready to do the camping trip we realized this is a corp. of engineers campsite camp ground so we kind of panicked for a little bit," says Fitzgerald.
If the government had shutdown, the parks' website says campers would have had to leave by Sunday.
"We just kept our fingers crossed and praying and then we learned at 12 o'clock last [Friday] night we could go for it," says Guel.
The avoided shutdown also kept Little Rock Central High School National Historic site open.
